Five years ago I joined HSF as Board Chairman because I knew from personal experience the importance of a college education. At that time tens of thousands of scholars had already graduated college with the help of HSF outreach, mentoring, and scholarship programs. Those students were just the tip of the iceberg. In the following years, Hispanics would become the fastest growing population in the U.S.
HSF’s mission to educate that population has never been more critical, not only for deserving students and their families, but also for our country’s competitiveness. Over the years, we have had to do more with less, enduring the economic downturn of the country with unwavering determination to continue to advance our mission. We have continued to lead by leveraging existing programs through partnerships with allies, such as Univision, the Spanish-language TV network that reaches millions of viewers, as well as with The Coca–Cola Company and the Staples, Walmart and Lumina foundations, among many others. Together, we are pioneering ground-breaking programs like the Ad Council’s national parental engagement campaign Your Words Today, the Education Summit, and our Generation 1st Degree Initiative.
Five years ago, we could foresee how crucial the HSF mission would become. Today, it’s a national priority…America’s future depends on it.
